Seattle-Snohomish Mill Closing

You will be sad to no longer hear the clacking of lumber or see the smoke billow out of the kiln of this iconic Snohomish landmark.  Sadly, the Seattle-Snohomish Mill will be closing their gates for good in 60 days.  SSM has been an employer to a lot of people since it's opening day in 1941...yet another victim of our economic times.

This mill and many others are victims of extreme environmental regulation. This mill and many others along with logging, trucking and mountain road building used provide good jobs for people with a high school education. Timber sales used to fund education. Now timber does nothing but wait to burn as a forest fire. It is horrable to see SeaSno go! I hope the Greenies are happy!

Comments from the community:

Kevin Williams It survived the ravages of fires and floods but the demise of small businesses is too much. Sleep well, Snohomish. Dream of bygone businesses and Rest In Peace in your little bedroom community.

Jim Sekulich This mill and many others are victoms of xtreme environmental regulation. Steve Livers we take these companies for granted til they're gone... this is going to sting more than many know.

Diane Carlson Williams Sachi Jewelry just closed down after years of being in business on First Street, and now the Sea-Sno Milll. Can't be good for Snohomish's already struggling tax revenue base. Who said the recession is over?

Cristy Gillespie Unfortunately our town is being changed, whether we like it or not....soon it will be renamed to "Bellevue North" with all the high end crap ($200.00 jeans really???..for mucking stalls??) and fancy expensive gardening...there are a few businesses left owned by good local people just trying to hang on and keep things going ~ bless them!

Judy Troupe Schoening The clanging of the saw mill and the whistles will always be a fond memory for me.

Ruth Westberg I think more and more companies will choose to locate somewhere other than Snohomish. This place does not take care of business! Its more about wine tasting and beer drinking! RIP SeaSno Mill

Judi Joslin Sutherland This is bad news all around, no jobs for the mill workers, the loggers, prices up for lumber and how much will we now buy from Canada? Greenies and spotted owl lovers what are your houses made of?

Renee Kline Hoerath Wow, I tell one person about the Mill Closing and look what happend, My hubby came home Monday and informed me, it is sad, and not just the employees will be out of work, the loggers, where they eat lunch, get gas a lot of people will be hurting from this, plus this morning when he went in. Another Sad thing happend at the mill, the night security man fell and hit his head & died around 2AM and was not found tell 5:15Am this morning. The Mill sent the employees home for the day. My Prayers and thoughts go to his family!
