Fatal fire under investigation

Detectives are investigating a fatal fire that displaced dozens this morning.

At about 2:45 a.m. on May 23, 2014, Everett officers were dispatched to the 8500 block of 10th Ave W. on the report of malicious activity when a neighbor heard the sound of breaking glass. Officers arriving at 8530 10th Ave W (Candlewood Apartments) saw flames and smoke coming from the “A” building and immediately requested assistance from Everett Fire. The building was evacuated and firefighters extinguished the blaze. There was extensive damage to the building. Inside an apartment, one fatality was discovered.

The incident is being investigated as a fatal fire and detectives are working to establish the cause.

Information on the gender or age of the fatality has not been established. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office will be called to the scene to take custody of the body for identification as well as cause and manner of death.

Two people were transported to Providence Medical Center Everett for minor non-life threatening injuries.

Dozens of residents were displaced and will not be able to return until the building has been assessed for safety. This process may take several hours and the American Red Cross is providing support to those displaced.
