Low Back Pain Treatments

Overlake Medical Center will host a free class on low back dysfunction and new minimally-invasive treatment options available to patients Nov. 13 at the hospital’s PACCAR Education Center in Bellevue.

“Up to 85 percent of people will suffer some sort of back pain in their lifetime,” said Dr. Abhineet Chowdhary, director of neurosurgery and neuro-interventional surgery at Overlake Medical Center.

Dr. Chowdhary wants to increase patient understanding of lower back dysfunction and increase awareness of new surgical techniques and treatment options available to patients. He will present an overview of new minimally-invasive treatments that are providing patients with better long-term results and faster post-surgery recovery time.

Chowdhary will explain two new procedures to treat low-back pain, including:
• Minimally-invasive SI Joint Fusion – a new surgical procedure to stabilize the sacroiliac (SI) joint, which connects the spine and pelvis.
• Minimally-invasive Spine Surgery – an alternative to open back surgery to repair herniated disks or stenosis of the lumbar spine.

Lower back problems can result from degenerative disease, trauma, failed back surgery and pregnancy/childbirth, among other reasons. Lower back symptoms can often limit daily activities and work.

Overlake’s team of back and spine experts can treat a range of back troubles — from fractures and herniated disks to spinal tumors and scoliosis. While the back is a complex anatomical structure, Overlake’s spinal surgeons have specialized training in diagnosing and treating back pain.
