Seattle waterfront construction

The summer-like weather is expected to bring an early start to the Washington State Ferries’ busy summer season. But this year, with construction projects in full swing near the ferry entrances, drivers will see a change to ferry holding lanes if Seattle’s Colman Dock reaches capacity.

Starting as early as Friday, June 12, WSF will use uniformed police officers to direct drivers to an on-street ferry holding lane located on southbound Alaskan Way. These changes will only take effect when the dock exceeds capacity, and will not affect bicyclists or pedestrians.

This change will be especially noticeable to drivers traveling northbound on Alaskan Way who usually turn left onto Yesler Way to get to the ferries. When Colman Dock reaches capacity, left turns for northbound drivers will be restricted and drivers will be directed to a detour that leads to the southbound Alaskan Way holding area.

The busiest times are expected to be late Friday afternoons and Saturdays. Drivers traveling to Bainbridge Island and Bremerton, or dropping off passengers, should arrive well ahead of scheduled sailing times or consider traveling during off-peak hours. Travelers can sign up for travel alerts, follow Washington State Ferries on Twitter, and visit the Washington State Ferries website for the latest information.
