Drowning near Troublesome Creek Campground

INDEX, Wash. – At approximately 5:30 PM last evening, a call was placed to 911 to report that ‘someone was in the river and he could not get them out.’ The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office and the King County Police Department responded to the area, along with fire personnel, in approximately the 62000 block of Index-Galena Road, which is near to the Troublesome Creek Campground.

Witnesses advised that they were traveling as a group of four adults (this is all of the detail we have at this time; unknown relationship with other adults) when two men in the group went swimming, which was in the North Fork of the Skykomish River. The area was beneath a waterfall that was turbulent and difficult to swim in. One swimmer barely made it out of the water and they observed the other man go under and then not surface again. The operation shifted from a rescue mission to a recovery mission this evening.

The missing man is in his early 20’s from the Lake Stevens area.

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team will be resuming the recovery mission tomorrow, due to the technically complicated and remote area and the need for daylight to conduct the operation.
