Lutes stun Boxers with late goal, win 1-0

Pacific Lutheran's Joel Frykholm chose a pretty dramatic moment to score his first goal of the 2015 season, finding the net with just a over a minute left to play to lead his Lutes to a 1-0 win over Pacific in men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Hanson Stadium.

Frykholm's goal came as the match was just about to head to overtime, with just 1:03 left on the clock. He picked up a pass near the goal from Diego Aceves and popped in the shot past a diving Leyton Thommasen from 13 yards out, sending his delirious teammates running onto the field to dog pile on him in the corner of the field.

The victory kept the second-place Lutes within shouting distance of Northwest Conference leader Whitworth. PLU is now 10-2 in NWC play and 14-4 overall. Whitworth is 10-1-1 after defeating Linfield today and is 14-1-1 overall. Pacific is now 3-8-1 in conference play with the heartbreaking loss and is 5-11-1 on the year.

Frykholm's goal came just a few minutes after Pacific's Matt Kimball left the game after being handed a red card, leaving the Boxers a man down.

The match was played in a steady downpour on the Hanson Stadium turf. The Pacific defense gave a yeoman's effort all afternoon long, as Thommasen had seven saves and redirected a number of other Pirate shots. Pacific Lutheran had 19 total shots (nine on goal) while Pacific had three shots and one that had to be saved by Lute goalkeeper Mike Arguello. PLU had 11 corner kicks to Pacific's one.

The Boxers will return to Hanson Stadium less than 24 hours from now, hosting Puget Sound at 1:30. It's the final home match of the year for the Boxers.
