US 2 between Skykomish and Stevens Pass

Traffic is moving once again on US 2 between Skykomish and Stevens Pass.

Contractors working for the Washington State Department of Transportation have opened a single lane on US 2 across a bridge that was damaged by flood waters last week. Drivers should prepare for a full closure of the highway five miles west of Skykomish (milepost 44) on Tuesday night as crews replace a culvert also damaged in last week’s storm.

One lane of US 2 opens east of Skykomish

Crews worked diligently over the weekend to install a series of jacks underneath the bridge’s foundation. This stabilized the bridge making it safe to allow vehicles across the structure. The bridge reopened to alternating traffic at 10:10 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 22.

Speeds will be reduced through the work zone as contractor crews continue work to repair the damaged bridge. Temporary signals are in place to alternate one-way traffic. The signal timing is set up to best accommodate peak traffic.

Drivers should expect delays of 20 minutes on Sunday and 10 minutes on Monday. Oversized loads will not be allowed to cross the bridge until further notice.

WSDOT expects to open the bridge to two-way traffic by Tuesday, Nov. 24.

Full closure of US 2 Tuesday night

An embankment located on US 2 between Skykomish and Index collapsed in last week’s storm, also damaging a culvert. Over the past few days crews have worked to stabilize the slope and they will now replace the culvert during a full overnight closure of the highway from 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, to 5 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26.
