The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) and Washington Army National Guard are proud to announce the 2015-16 Scholastic Cup Champions: Evergreen Lutheran (1B), Northwest Christian (Colbert) (2B), King’s (1A), Sehome (2A), Mercer Island (3A) and Newport (Bellevue) (4A).

The Scholastic Cup is the WIAA’s most prestigious annual school award. The year-long competition recognizes the top school in each of the six WIAA classifications based on academic, athletic and sportsmanship excellence. Points are awarded by a school’s finish in each of the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires State Championships and Academic State Championships.

“This award was designed to recognize the best overall programs in the State both academically and athletically,” WIAA Executive Director Mike Colbrese said. “The achievements of these student-athletes and the leadership at their schools is celebrated through this award.”

Continuing their reign atop the 1A and 3A classifications are the King’s Knights and the Mercer Island Islanders. Each have captured the Scholastic Cup Title in their classification, nine times. The Knights tallied a score of 1,860, the fourth highest mark all-time and second in 1A, behind last year’s record-setting mark of 2,075. King’s captured three athletic State Championships during the 2015-16 school year. The boys basketball team claimed its second-straight title, while the Knights swept the titles in boys and girls golf. In addition, seven academic State Championships secured the Scholastic Cup for King’s who bested second place, Seattle Academy’s 990 point finish.
The Islanders claimed their 3A crown with a point total of 1,605. The boys tennis team claimed the Islander’s lone athletic State Championship, which paired with the dance/drill team’s academic State Championship. Mercer Island had seven athletic teams finish in the fop five to record the seventh highest point total in the 3A classification. Interlake High School was second with a score of 1,415, their highest finish in school history. Mercer Island’s 14 top five finishes are the most among all of the member schools.

The Newport (Bellevue) Knights won their fourth-straight Cup after tallying 1,535 points, second all-time in the 4A classification. The Knights’ boys swimming and diving State Championship coupled with a boys tennis first place finish propelled them to another Scholastic Cup. In addition to the athletic State Championships, six academic State Championships kept the total too high for runner-up, Lewis and Clark, who had 1,180 points. It was the third time the Tigers finished in the top five and their second, second place finish.

Sehome ended the year with 1,355 points edging out Selah’s 1,345 in 2A. It’s the second-straight Scholastic Cup for the Mariners and fifth overall. Boys tennis earned a State Championship on the court, but also garnered the academic State Championship, while the boys cross country team claimed the other Mariner State Championship. The Viking’s second place finish was the highest mark in school history and 2016 marks their third top five finish.

The Crusaders of Northwest Christian (Colbert) captured the 2B classification eclipsing Saint George’s by 30 points (1,465-1,435). The boys basketball and girls golf State Championships combined with five academic State Titles secured the narrow win for the Crusaders. Northwest Christian secured their third Scholastic Cup and recorded their eighth top five finish.

Evergreen Lutheran secured its first 1B title with a point total of 980, sixth best all-time in the classification. With two academic State Championships and three top five finishes in athletic State Competitions, the Eagles soared past last year’s Scholastic Cup Champions, Crosspoint, who finished with 865 points.
