FEMA Region 10 Monthly Media Outreach

WHO: Media outlets in Idaho, Oregon and Washington that want to stay informed during a disaster, when conventional methods of communication such as telephone, internet and television do not work.

WHAT: The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) monthly Communications Exercise (CommEx) in Region 10 transmits a voice and digital radio message intended for the media. This will be a short message used to confirm media outlets’ equipment is operating correctly.

WHEN: The next CommEx takes place December 19, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. PST; this event takes place the third Wednesday of every month.

WHERE: The FEMA Region 10 radio operator will send out a voice message to media outlets on 5330.5 KHz Upper Side Band (USB). Additionally, at 11:15 a.m. PST, Region 10 will send a digital copy of the message over radio using BPSK-31 protocol on 5346.5 KHz USB immediately following the voice message.

WHY: When conventional methods of communication fail, radio may be the next best option. As members of the media, we invite you to participate in our monthly communication exercises to support your role in informing the public with critical, life-saving information.

HOW: Upon receipt of one or both messages, send a confirmation e-mail to Regional Emergency Communications Coordinator Laura Goudreau and the Region 10 News Desk with the name of your media outlet, time message was received and a general summary of the message. Media outlets ARE NOT to transmit on the frequency. Validation of message receipt is only thru email.  The alternate frequency for this net is 5403.5 KHz USB in case the primary frequency does not propagate well. If you do not hear traffic on 5330.5 KHz, check 5403.5 KHz.
