First Cross Valley Pigskin Challenge at Veterans Memorial Stadium

The modern version of the Mason-Dixon Line travels through the center of the Snohomish school district and defines whether you wear Panther red or Grizzly blue. The Snohomish River is the natural line that determines when you attend Glacier Peak High School on the hill or Snohomish High School in the valley.

This is the fifth year of the divide and the first year the two schools will meet on the gridiron.

Many have been waiting for this game to finally get established. The reasons for the wait are all over the map, some say that it’s because they didn’t want to have players that used to attend Snohomish high school have to play against their old school. Others say that Glacier Peak gutted Snohomish in talent and that it wouldn’t be fair. There was also some talk that they wanted the two schools to act like one and down play the rivalry.

Certainly Glacier Peak has had some spectacular success right from the start which has added to people dragging their feet in putting this game on the schedule. In fact this is the first year that Veterans Memorial Stadium has natural colors instead of red that was a direct slap at Glacier Peak for the first four years.

Tonight’s game won’t be as easy for Glacier Peak as it may appear on paper. Everyone knows that when a rivalry is involved you can expect anything. Glacier Peak won their first game against Lake Stevens and is ranked 6th in state by the Seattle Times. Snohomish lost their first game against Oak Harbor but will play harder than they ever have before against GP.

Standing room only is guaranteed so get there early. Gates open for player families at 5:30 and everyone else at 6pm. If you don’t get in you can watch it live at www.STSPN.com.

Fans are encouraged to be respectful of the other attendees and please yell positive cheers.
