Words for Thirds

Fryelands Elementary School third graders Brena Tally, Jack Kuntz, Cason Horness, Cristina Santiago-DeDios and Harmony Layson show off the front and back covers of their new dictionaries from the Tualco Grange in Monroe.

For a dozen years the grange members have been giving a free dictionary to each third grader enrolled in one of Monroe’s public schools.

That is more than 5,000 dictionaries according to Leslie Wells, one of the grange members volunteering with the program. “Words for Thirds” is a national program supported by granges across the country.

“We tell the children that they are our future leaders and a dictionary is an excellent tool for them to have for their learning and future service to the community,” said Wells.

Monroe Public Schools provides an outstanding education that results in all students having a passion for learning.
