Marko Liias Announces Re-Election Campaign

State Senator Marko Liias announced his re-election campaign to the Washington State Senate today. Liias, who was first elected to the State Senate in 2014, and now serves as the Senate Majority Floor Leader, enters the campaign with a broad base of early supporters including endorsements from the Mayors of Edmonds, Everett, Lynnwood, and Mukilteo, 21st LD Representatives Lillian Ortiz-Self and Strom Peterson, and Congress Members Rick Larsen and Suzan DelBene, along with the Southwest Snohomish County Firefighters (IAFF 1828), SEIU Locals 775 & 1199NW, and Joint Council of Teamsters #28.

“I’m proud of my contribution to the important progress we have made in Olympia, but we still have so much more to do to ensure all Washingtonians have the opportunity to succeed,” Liias said. “That work is my motivator heading into another campaign, so that I can continue to fight for families across our district and our state.”

“In a short time, Marko has become a true leader in the State Senate for our district,” said State Representative Lillian Ortiz-Self. “Whether its fighting for our youth by banning gay conversion therapy or creating a Student Loan Bill of Rights, or standing up for families by giving us a refund on car tabs, Marko is an effective advocate for us!”

Throughout his time in Olympia, Liias has prioritized opportunity for all Washingtonians through education, job creation, and worker protections. “Marko is a clear and consistent voice for working families,” said Leonard Kelley, Secretary Treasurer of the Snohomish County Labor Council. “In the State Senate, he has stood up for people over corporations and finds paths to increase access to economic opportunity for all.”

Born and raised in the 21st District, Liias has also prioritized community safety. Thad Hovis, President of Southwest Snohomish Firefighters Local 1828, said, “Senator Liias has been a champion for first responders, as well as protections that keep our schools, streets, and communities safe. He has our full support.”

Liias was born in Edmonds and graduated from Kamiak High School in Mukilteo. Thanks to student loans and scholarships, he received his bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University and recently completed a Master’s in Public Administration at the University of Washington. Now a resident of Everett, Liias volunteers with the Kamiak High School Debate Program, and serves on the Boards of the Transportation Choices Coalition and Seattle Repertory Theatre.
