Marine Resources Committee

Protecting, and restoring the marine and estuarine environment of the county is one of the core roles of Snohomish County Surface Water Management. Snohomish County is seeking three to four new advisors motivated and eager to learn about marine conservation, participate in science-based research, and contribute to policy recommendations on marine issues as a part of the Marine Resources Committee (MRC).

Those selected to serve on the MRC will help recommend actions to the Snohomish County Executive and the County Council during a three-year term running 2020 through 2022, with the possibility of two additional terms.

The MRC is involved in creating and piloting marine ecology research projects and tools such as the new MyCoast App project which crowd sources shoreline photos from the public to monitor changes in beach environments. The committee also helps with community education and leads marine conservation events. MRC members provide input on marine science and policy for Snohomish County.

Volunteers must apply and go through a selection process. Appointed committee members will help shape local and regional marine conservation policy. The MRC meetings are held in Everett on the third Wednesday of every month from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Members are expected to volunteer at least 10 hours per month for MRC project planning and implementation, in addition to the monthly meetings. The deadline for applications is November 18, 2019 or until filled.

The MRC currently has 12 members, they represent a balance of scientists, local and tribal governments' staff and recreational, economic, and environmental interests. The mission of the MRC is to understand, protect, and restore the marine and estuarine ecosystems of the county. There are seven MRCs in the Northwest Straits region of the Puget Sound.

To apply, please send a cover letter explaining your interest in volunteering along with your resume and three references to Kathleen Pozarycki at Kathleen.pozarycki@snoco.org. Interested candidates will also need to submit an online application form here. Please select “Marine Resources Advisory Committee” from the drop down menu when applying.
